What Elf Inspection does

Elf Inspection guides inspection of Linux ELF executables and shared libraries with tools like readelf, objdump, nm, and ldd. Use it to check symbols, sections, dependencies, debug info, build IDs, relocations, and linker or runtime symbol errors.

Elf Inspection is cataloged under Quality on DirSkills. Elf Inspection comes from a repository tagged ai-agent-skills, build-systems, c-cpp-toolchain, compilers and cross-compilation.

Documentation

README

ELF Inspection

Purpose

Guide agents through inspecting Linux ELF binaries: symbol tables, section layout, dynamic linking, debug info, and diagnosing linker errors.

Triggers

  • "What libraries does this binary depend on?"
  • "Why is this binary so large?"
  • "I have an undefined reference or symbol not found at runtime"
  • "How do I check if debug info is in this binary?"
  • "How do I find what symbols a library exports?"
  • "How do I check if a binary is PIE / has RELRO?"

Workflow

1. Quick overview: file and size

file prog # type, arch, linkage, stripped or not
size prog # section sizes: text, data, bss
size --format=sysv prog # detailed per-section breakdown

2. Dynamic dependencies: ldd

Frequently asked about Elf Inspection

  • What else does mohitmishra786 publish alongside Elf Inspection?

Elf Inspection is one of 25 skills that DirSkills catalogs from mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills, the repository it ships in. Its siblings there include ADC And DAC Bare Metal, AF XDP and Bare-Metal Startup. Each one is a separate skill with its own page in this directory, installs the same way Elf Inspection does, and is maintained by mohitmishra786 in that same repository. The rest of the collection is listed on the mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills page.

  • How does Elf Inspection compare to other Quality skills?

Elf Inspection ranks #1548 by stars among the 1662 Quality skills in this catalog. The most-starred ones next to it are Benchmark, Benchmark Optimization Loop and API Design Patterns. DirSkills ranks by the star count of the repository each skill ships in, so that order reflects how popular those repositories are rather than any review of Elf Inspection against them. Open each page to compare what they document and how they install.
