What Property-Based Testing does

Property-Based Testing helps write tests for serialization, validation, normalization, and pure functions by generating inputs and checking invariants. Use it to choose strong properties like roundtrip or idempotence and match them to a testing library.

Property-Based Testing is cataloged under Quality on DirSkills. Property-Based Testing comes from a repository tagged claude, claude-code, claude-code-plugin, claude-code-plugin-marketplace and skills.

Property-Based Testing

Overview

Property-based testing (PBT) generates random inputs and verifies that properties hold for all of them. Instead of testing specific examples, you test invariants.

When PBT beats example-based tests:

  • Serialization pairs (encode/decode)
  • Pure functions with clear contracts
  • Validators and normalizers
  • Data structure operations

Frequently asked about Property-Based Testing

  • What else does ed3dai publish alongside Property-Based Testing?

Property-Based Testing is one of 25 skills that DirSkills catalogs from ed3dai/ed3d-plugins, the repository it ships in. Its siblings there include Asking Clarifying Questions, Brainstorming and Coding Effectively. Each one is a separate skill with its own page in this directory, installs the same way Property-Based Testing does, and is maintained by ed3dai in that same repository. The rest of the collection is listed on the ed3dai/ed3d-plugins page.

  • How does Property-Based Testing compare to other Quality skills?

Property-Based Testing ranks #1297 by stars among the 1418 Quality skills in this catalog. The most-starred ones next to it are Benchmark, Benchmark Optimization Loop and API Design Patterns. DirSkills ranks by the star count of the repository each skill ships in, so that order reflects how popular those repositories are rather than any review of Property-Based Testing against them. Open each page to compare what they document and how they install.

Defense In Depth

Defense In Depth validates data at every layer it passes through so invalid values are caught by entry, business, environment, and debug checks. Use it when bad input causes failures deep in execution or tests bypass earlier validation.
