What Work Summary does

Work Summary generates a compact dashboard from MCP work items, showing what is active, blocked, next, and queued. Use it at session start or when asking for project status, backlog, or where to resume work.

Work Summary is cataloged under Automation on DirSkills. Work Summary comes from a repository tagged ai-coding-assistant, ai-development, ai-harness, ai-memory and ai-tools.

Documentation

README

Work Summary โ€” Current (v3)

Attention-first project dashboard. The default (lean) mode answers four questions โ€” what's moving, what's stuck, what's next, what's queued โ€” in a bounded view (~45 lines) regardless of workspace size. The exhaustive inventory is available as an explicit mode, not the default: mature workspaces accumulate hundreds of terminal items, and rendering them all buries the actionable content.

Supplement the data with brief observations only when there is a genuine anomaly or actionable insight.

Frequently asked about Work Summary

  • What else does jpicklyk publish alongside Work Summary?

Work Summary is one of 25 skills that DirSkills catalogs from jpicklyk/task-orchestrator, the repository it ships in. Its siblings there include API Compatibility Review, Adopt Project Scope and Batch Complete. Each one is a separate skill with its own page in this directory, installs the same way Work Summary does, and is maintained by jpicklyk in that same repository. The rest of the collection is listed on the jpicklyk/task-orchestrator page.

  • How does Work Summary compare to other Automation skills?

Work Summary ranks #1737 by stars among the 1956 Automation skills in this catalog. The most-starred ones next to it are Autonomous Loops, Autonomous Agent Harness and Automation Audit Ops. DirSkills ranks by the star count of the repository each skill ships in, so that order reflects how popular those repositories are rather than any review of Work Summary against them. Adopt Project Scope

Adopt Project Scope migrates an existing unscoped Task Orchestrator database to project scoping in place. It creates or attaches a project root, re-parents existing work trees, and writes the root UUID to config.yaml when setting up a workspace for multiple projects.

Batch Complete

Batch Complete closes out or cancels multiple items in a task tree. Use it to finish a feature subtree, clean up old work, or archive completed workstreams.

Configure Server

Configure Server decides how the MCP Task Orchestrator container runs and is reached, including HTTP vs STDIO, REST API mode, port publishing, config mounts, and config-sync. Use it when reconfiguring the server, exposing the API, or switching endpoints.

Create Item

Create Item turns conversation context into a tracked MCP work item. It anchors bugs, features, tech debt, and observations in the right container, infers priority, and can create single items or work trees.

Dependency Manager

Dependency Manager visualizes, creates, and deletes BLOCKS-style dependencies between MCP work items. Use it to see what blocks an item, link items, remove edges, or diagnose why work cannot start.
